Today, during the school day, while completing running records with my students, I found something to be very interesting. The student in my class who is a literate native Spanish speaker has very strong decoding skills. However, his comprehension skills are deficit due to the fact that he has limited vocabulary to express his ideas about what he has read. I found it frustrating for the both of us because I know he knows what happened in the story but is restricted in expressing the summary! He did however go from reading at a level "A" to level "D" according to the Colombia Teacher's College Reading and Writing project. I hope that through the next few months, he absorbs more vocabulary words necessary to retell a story to the best of his ability!
