Today, during the school day I found out that one of my first grade students will be visiting his hometown in Ecuador for an entire month. He will be missing school. He came to the US this summer and had extremely limited English. I feel as if he has made so much progress so far since September and I am afraid that he will lose some of his vocabulary while he is away. Another one of my students just returned from Ecuador after having been away for a month and has made a
substantial regression in all areas of academics. I have noticed that he is no longer comfortable among his peers or in the classroom in general. He is hesitant to speak aloud and it takes him a great deal of time to "find the words" he wants to say. I gave him work to take with him, but it was not enough to either
maintain nor
increase his vocabulary. I feel very
discouraged.
